Machinery, electronic trade may hit record
China's export and import of machinery and electronic products may exceed US$1 trillion this year, an industry official said.
Customs statistics show that the country's trade volume of machinery and electronic products totalled US$605.57 billion during the first eight months of this year.
Export of machinery and electronic products had a year-on-year increase of 29.8 per cent to US$336.63 billion from January to August, accounting for 56.1 per cent of the country's total exports.
Imports grew 25.5 per cent year-on-year to US$268.94 billion during this period, accounting for 53.3 per cent of China's total imports.
"Based on the current performance, the sector's trade volume for the whole year is expected to increase by over 25 per cent," Zhang Yujing, executive-vice president and secretary-general of the China Chamber of Commerce for the Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products, told China Daily.
Imports and exports will reach US$900 billion this year, and are likely to hit a record US$1 trillion if the annual growth exceeds 28.7 per cent, Zhang said.
However, the development of China's machinery and electronic products sector is facing some problems.
In recent years, foreign countries have imposed increasing trade barriers on machinery and electronic products exported from China.
Statistics show that in 2005 alone, there were 11 anti-dumping and safeguard measures imposed on China's machinery and electronic products, with an involved trade volume of US$320 billion.
These adopted trade barriers have not affected the growing trend of China's export of machinery and electronic products, Zhang said.
However, if foreign countries launched anti-dumping or safeguard measures on products with relatively high trading volumes, like colour TVs, brake discs and ball bearings, the measures will have a hugely negative impact on related industries, Zhang warned.
To minimize losses caused by growing trade conflicts in the global market in the future, the chamber established a legal service centre earlier this year, helping enterprises to respond to foreign charges.
The legal service centre has helped enterprises respond to 10 investigations during the first half of this year.
It helped 16 well cover enterprises prepare for the review of the EU's anti-dumping charge and organized domestic companies response to the 337 investigation in United States on lighters exported from China.
"We will continue to focus on enterprise-demanding services in the future," Zhang said, adding that the chamber will also co-operate with local enterprises in key sectors to pay higher attention to intellectual property rights.
Without self-developed intellectual property rights, Chinese enterprises have no core competitiveness in the world market and therefore cannot achieve sustainability.
In addition, machinery and electronic products manufacturing enterprises are also facing challenges like renminbi appreciation, rising energy and raw material costs, Zhang said.
To promote the industry's healthy and sustainable development, the chamber plans to improve the industry's infrastructure construction, strengthen its research work and expand international co-operation and exchanges, to provide better services and suggestions to its member companies.
It will also continue to promote the industry through high-quality exhibitions.
The chamber has organized nearly 4,000 exhibitors, which will occupy 6,510 booths, at the coming 100th Chinese Export Commodities Fair in Guangzhou.
The machinery and electronic products exhibition sector at the fair will be divided into seven parts, including home appliances, electronic information products, small vehicles and components, machinery and equipment, tools and light fittings.
Zhang expects that machinery and electronic products will remain the key trading sector at the export commodities fair.
"The trading volume is estimated to hit US$10 billion during the fair," he said.
